Description
In a nutshell:
From Argentina's high-altitude Salta region, this is an elegant, fruity Torrontés with bright citrus, fragrant jasmine, and a zippy freshness that makes it wonderfully vibrant and refreshing.
The lowdown:
This is Torrontés at its expressive best, with a sublty perfumed bouquet that'll turns heads. Grown in the high-altitude vineyards of Salta's Calchaqui Valley, where dramatic day-night temperature swings help lock in the vivid aromatics, it's bursting with character. Expect musky floral notes of elderflower, rose, and honeysuckle, layered with juicy peach, crisp apple, and zesty citrus. Ripe and intense yet wonderfully vibrant, it has a bright, refreshing streak that keeps everything balanced. A good showcase of Argentina's signature white grape, full of life and personality.
The Producer:
Bodega Colomé, established in 1831, is not only the oldest working winery in Argentina but also boasts some of the world's highest vineyards. Its stellar reputation earned it a spot as one of Tim Atkin's 'First Growths' in his 2016 Argentina Report. Located in the far north of Argentina in the Upper Calchaquí Valley, it's believed to have been founded by the Spanish Governor of Salta, Nicolás Severo de Isasmendi y Echalar. In 1854, his daughter introduced the first French pre-phylloxera Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon vines to the area, planting three small vineyards whose fruit still goes into the wines today. Currently, there are 140 hectares of vineyards planted at altitudes ranging from 2,300 to over 3,000 metres. Grapes grown at such high elevations develop thicker skins to protect against intense UV rays, resulting in wines with more colour, aroma, flavour, and antioxidants.
When to drink:
Thai fish cakes or a spicy prawn curry are great matches - the zesty citrus and floral notes handle spice beautifully. That said, it's just as lovely on its own.
Suitable for Vegans
