Description
In a nutshell:
An impressive magnum of Chimay's powerful, full and complex Belgian beer, one of the country's most famous Trappist breweries.
The lowdown:
The strongest of their range of Trappist beers it certainly has something of a Port like character about it. The Port like flavours develop if the beer is laid down for five years or more. This aromatic, lively, rich ale has a medium sweet middle, with gently drier suggestions of thyme, pepper, sandalwood and nutmeg on the finish. Known as Grande Reserve in magnums, it's the same as Blue Cap in smaller bottles.
The Brewery:
Bières de Chimay, a Trappist brewery within the Benedictine l'Abbaye Notre-Dame de Scourmont, has been in operation since 1862. The monks' brewing supports their community and charitable activities. Known for their distinctive beers like Chimay Rouge and Chimay Bleue, these brews are among the most respected in the Trappist tradition, offering a taste of monastic craftsmanship and quiet dedication to quality.
