Description
In a nutshell:
This Châteauneuf delivers warm, autumnal pleasures - brambles and woodsmoke, a touch of worn leather, and the kind of spice that lingers rather than shouts.
The lowdown:
A delightful surprise from Châteauneuf-du-Pape's stony vineyards, this 2021 red drinks like a Provençal summer. Blackcurrants and ripe plums burst forth, their richness edged with dark chocolate, hinting at the sun-drenched origins. Don't be fooled by its easy charm - a whisper of spice, like a stray clove, adds intrigue. The blend is classic Southern Rhône. Grenache, the region's heart, provides the backbone, its natural sweetness coaxing out the best of the fruit. A touch of Syrah adds muscle, while whispers of other permitted grapes weave their magic. Vinified with meticulous care in concrete tanks, the wine retains a freshness that allows the 2021 vintage's sunny soul to shine. Silky tannins and a kiss of spice complete the picture - a glass that's both thought-provoking and deeply satisfying.
The Producer:
Indisputably one of the Rhône's greats, M. Chapoutier boasts a rich history dating back to 1808 in Tain l'Hermitage. The estate's holdings are impressive, spanning the length of the Rhône and beyond, even reaching Australia. Yet, it's the arrival of Michel Chapoutier in 1990 that marks a turning point. His championing of biodynamic viticulture, coupled with exceptional vineyard sites, catapulted Chapoutier back to the top tier of Rhône producers. Their commitment to natural practices is absolute - no herbicides or pesticides, and a belief in biodiversity within the vineyards. Interestingly, their labels feature Braille since the mid-1990s. Today, they own Europe's largest biodynamic vineyard and create some of the Rhône's most iconic wines. Driven by Michel's energy, Chapoutier continues to acquire prime vineyards, cementing their status as a leader in the region.
When to drink:
Savoury and structured, this full-bodied wine will handsomely reward cellaring, but its charms are undeniable now alongside roast venison, a rich pigeon casserole, or even seared tuna - at its peak within the next decade.
