Description
In a nutshell:
A well-structured Médoc with rich blackcurrant, cedar, and earthy notes, balanced by refined tannins and a smooth, lingering finish.
The lowdown:
Château Patache d'Aux sits towards the northern end of the Médoc, and while 2017 was challenging across Bordeaux, conditions here were relatively kind. The blend ths year leans towards approachability, with Merlot making up around two-thirds, balanced by Cabernet Sauvignon for structure. Fermentation across old oak, cement and stainless steel, followed by careful ageing in new and one-year-old French oak, results in plush, vibrant fruit notes of blackcurrant, spiced plum, and subtle blackberry. The palate is rich, with smooth tannins, elegant oak integration and a lingering, powerful finish. It's refined yet generous, with the depth and complexity expected from quality Médoc.
The Producer:
Located in Bégadan, just 10 kilometres from the Gironde estuary, Château Patache dAux is one of the Médoc's northernmost estates, with roots dating back to 1720. The name "Patache" refers to both maritime customs vessels that used to patrol the river and the stagecoaches illustrated on its label. Acquired by Antoine Moueix Propriétés in 2016, the château has since undergone major investment, including a new cellar, sustainable vineyard practices, and a new winemaking team, supported by consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt. Its 63 hectares, planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, span Bégadan and Saint-Christoly, producing wines with quintessential Médoc character.
When to drink:
Ideal with grilled lamb, roasted game, or aged cheese, its rich structure and earthy notes complementing the bold, savoury flavours and it's drinking beautifully now, with potential to age gracefully until at least 2030.
