Description
In a nutshell:
A well-structured Médoc with rich blackcurrant, cedar, and earthy notes, balanced by refined tannins and a smooth, lingering finish.
The lowdown:
2016 saw near-perfect conditions in the northern Médoc, allowing Patache d'Aux's fruit to ripen at its own pace, building a rich, layered character. The blend, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon along with Merlot and a little Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, was fermented using a mix of old oak, cement, and stainless steel, followed by 12-14 months ageing in a blend of new and one-year-old French oak barrels and stainless steel. This approach has resulted in a wine with a plush, bright fruit profile, featuring blackcurrant, spiced plum, and a touch of blackberry. Aromas of dark fruits and fresh spices feature on the full-bodied palate along with well-integrated oak and smooth tannins. The finish is long and powerful and overall it's both elegant and deep, with a good balance of structure and plushness.
The Producer:
Located in Bégadan, just 10 kilometres from the Gironde estuary, Château Patache dAux is one of the Médoc's northernmost estates, with roots dating back to 1720. The name "Patache" refers to both maritime customs vessels that used to patrol the river and the stagecoaches illustrated on its label. Acquired by Antoine Moueix Propriétés in 2016, the château has since undergone major investment, including a new cellar, sustainable vineyard practices, and a new winemaking team, supported by consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt. Its 63 hectares, planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, span Bégadan and Saint-Christoly, producing wines with quintessential Médoc character.
When to drink:
Ideal with grilled lamb, roasted game, or aged cheese, its rich structure and earthy notes complementing the bold, savoury flavours and it's drinking beautifully now, with potential to age gracefully until at least 2030.
