Description
In a nutshell:
An elegant Médoc with dark fruit, a hint of oak, and a balanced structure that manages to feel both polished and inviting.
The lowdown:
Up in the northern Médoc, a distance from Bordeaux, the soils lean more towards clay than gravel, which suits Merlot a bit better than Cabernet Sauvignon. That said, the mixed terrain means you'll often find a good balance of both, as you do here in Tessonnière's flagship wine. This particular blend, roughly equal parts of both, is aged for 18 months in vats after fermentation. It's brimming with ripe blackcurrant and raspberry flavours, with a subtle hint of spice. On the palate, it's lively and well-balanced, with fine tannins and a rounded finish that's hard to resist. Balanced and engaging claret.
The Producer:
Château La Tessonnière, tucked away in the northern Médoc near Bégadan, has been in the same family for over a century. Since 1995, it's been in the capable hands of Cédric Colemyn, the founder's great-grandson, who's expanded the estate to 18 hectares planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Classified as a "Cru Artisan", it's one of the Médocs small, family-run estates recognised for exceptional quality. The name "Tessonnière" harks back to the days when the land was teeming with badgers - 'tessoun' being Gascon for badger sett. Thankfully, the wines now take centre stage, not the wildlife.
When to drink:
Perfect with something hearty like Gascon pork confit or a bit of black pudding - basically, anything rich enough to stand up to its dark fruit and firm tannins - or if you're feeling like it, a wedge of nutty Comté does the trick.
Suitable for Vegans
