Description
In a nutshell:
Plump Bordeaux with loads of red fruit. The perfect claret combination, easy-drinking but still has that bit of something special.
The lowdown:
This is one of those "petit château" clarets that punches well above its weight. It's juicy, full of red fruit with a hint of sweet cedar and the tannins are soft and easy-going, making it effortlessly drinkable. And there's a surprisingly long finish. The vineyards are over in the Entre-Deux-Mers, with the blend being mainly Merlot with a good supporting role played by Cabernet Sauvignon. It spends about a year in barriques to gain character and silkiness. It's one that'll grace any table and we're really pleased to have come across it.
The Producer:
Located in the Entre-Deux-Mers near the village of Ladaux, Château Gabelot is a well-run example of those small estates that proliferate in these parts. Marc and Jean Médeville along with their cousin Jacques manage the property, and their 20 hectares of vineyards are noteworthy for yielding up rich, generous reds and elegant, lively whites. Their strong commitment to sustainable practices is demonstrated in them achieving organic certification with the 2020 vintage.
When to drink:
Affable and approachable this pairs wonderfully with classic roast dinners like beef and Yorkshire puddings, or try it with a deeply flavoured mushroom risotto.
