Description
In a nutshell:
Quite a characterful Muscadet from vineyards in St Fiacre at the confluence of the rivers Sevre and Maine.
The lowdown:
Véronique Günther-Chéreau and her daughter Aurore at Château du Coing are masters of Muscadet and they make this cuvée from vines that are, on average, 65 years old which helps give the weightier, fuller style they're after in this wine. It's a pale yellow in colour, with fresh aromas of white peach, green apples and floral notes while on the palate, the pure citrus fruit is bolstered by body, richness and structure from the lees ageing.
The Producer:
Château du Coing, part of Vignobles Günther-Chéreau, is located in the village of Saint Fiacre, in the Sèvre-et-Maine district of Muscadet. The current owner and winemaker, Véronique Günther-Chéreau, decided in 1990 to return to her family's estate after achieving a doctorate degree in pharmacy. Véronique's family had been making wine at Saint Fiacre since 1421, and she grew up on the estate. In 2011, her daughter Aurore joined the family domaine, following her biology and oenology studies in Dijon. Their 40 hectares of vines lie at the meeting point of the Sèvre and Maine rivers, where the distinctive gneiss soils give a particularly racy, fragrant style of Muscadet. Unusually for an area dominated by the négociants, Château du Coing is family-run and uses only estate-grown fruit.
When to drink:
Fresh, lively and, naturally, ideal with seafood.
Suitable for Vegans
