Description
France: Bordeaux
Mellow & Rounded Red
Medium-Bodied - Oaked
ABV 13.5% - 75.0cl
In a Nutshell:
A mature petit château Bordeaux with structure and depth from a solid Cabernet Sauvignon component.
The Lowdown:
Between the Dordogne and Garonne lies Entre-Deux-Mers, home to plenty of good-value petit châteaux like this. Cabernet Sauvignon makes up a fair share of the blend here - unusual for the area but handy when you want structure enough to age, which at six years old, this 2019 has. The fruit's matured into red plum and cherry with earthy, savoury notes, while time in oak has added subtle spice and smoothness. And nicely softened tannins leave it feeling balanced and complete. For mature Bordeaux at this price, it's a decent catch.
The Producer:
Vignobles Ducourt, from Ladaux in the heart of Bordeaux's Entre-Deux-Mers, has grown from small beginnings in the 1950s under Henri Ducourt into quite a substantial operation. Now spanning 14 châteaux and 450 hectares, it's still very much a family affair, with Henri's grandchildren Bernard, Philippe, and Marie Christine steering the ship. Their vineyards follow the agriculture raisonnée system, favouring minimal intervention and cutting back on artificial pesticides - an approach that pays dividends in the glass. The range is as impressive as it is approachable, offering excellent quality without breaking the bank.
When to Drink:
Good with roast chicken, lamb chops or beef stew - the structure and earthy character suit hearty dishes well.
