Description
In a nutshell:
A full bodied, silky and elegant southern French red from the shores of the Mediterranean near Narbonne.
The lowdown:
Jean Paux-Rosset at the small Languedoc estate at Château la Negly has, over the years, been quietly building up quite a name for his ripe and silky wines. This delightful blend of Carignan, Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah amply demonstrates that. No oak ageing takes place here so the pure fruitiness is allowed to do its own thing. There are pronounced aromas of blackcurrant, prune, fig and sweet spice followed by a lovely and rich palate with intense and complex flavours of fresh and dried fruit, clove, cinnamon, prune and liquorice. With soft ripe tannins and a long finish this is an impressive wine for a modest price.
The Producer:
Situated in the village of Fleury d'Aude, in the region known as La Clape, Château de la Négly encompasses 25 hectares of vineyards overlooking the Mediterranean, near Narbonne. Here, owner Jean Paux-Rosset, along with his skilled consultant oenologist Claude Gros, produces exceptional, natural, and unmanipulated wines from low-yielding, super-ripe, hand-picked fruit.
When to drink:
Indulgent and silky, just the thing with a good piece of steak.
