Description
In a nutshell:
A refreshing white wine with fresh acidity and vibrant citrus flavours from the Bordeaux region, France.
The lowdown:
This wine is light gold in colour and the nose displays bright, precise aromas of citrus fruit and white peaches. Full-bodied, the palate is well balanced with fresh acidity and a vibrant citrus fruit character which culminates in a refreshing, lingering finish. The vines have an average age of 25 years. A short pre-fermentation maceration took place for 10 to 24 hours to maximise flavour extraction from the skins. Fermentation followed at low temperatures in stainless steel tanks. The wine was left in contact with its lees to give extra body and complexity to the body.
The Producer:
Vines have been grown at Château de Fontenille since the 13th Century and a pilgrimage route runs through the vineyards to the neighbouring Abbaye de la Sauve-Majeure, whose monks tended the vines for hundreds of years. With 17ha planted with white varieties the Fontenille vineyards produce some of the purest wines in Bordeaux, attributed to the free-draining soils made from gravel and clay, and the high winds that reduce the disease pressure. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 110 metres above sea level in the Entre-Deux-Mers region, between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers.
When to drink:
The fuller body of this wine would suit pairing with meaty and oil fish dishes.
