Description
In a nutshell:
A smooth and velvety Malbec from one of the top Biodynamic estates in Cahors.
The lowdown:
Cahors is the traditional home of Malbec - more often called Cotin these parts - and Chateau de Chambert are acknowledged as one of the best producers. This is the estate's flagship cuvée and is made up of 85% Malbec and 15% Merlot which, after fermentation, spends 12 months in French oak. The result is an wine with an inky-deep colour and aromas of blueberries and violets. On the palate it's full of rich, dark blackberry fruit, plum and touches of vanilla. Wonderfully smooth and velvety with well integrated tannins and a superb balance of fruit and delicate, spicy oak at the finish.
The Producer:
Château de Chambert lies a few kilometres to the west of Cahors, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Owned and run by Philippe Lejeune since 2007, with the additional support of consultant winemaker Stéphane Derenoncourt, this estate has made quite a name for itself. Initially gaining organic certification in 2012 followed by Biodynamic certification in 2015, it's the largest organic and biodynamic estate in Cahors. Planted with 80% Malbec, 17% Merlot and 3% Chardonnay, the vines are located high up on the limestone 'causse', or plateau, regarded as the best part of the Cahors appellation. The limestone gives freshness and balance to the wines, while the red iron-oxide that cuts through the soils adds colour, richness and a powerful intensity.
When to drink:
Well capable of ageing for 15 years or more this is just made to go with full flavoured meat dishes like lamb shank or cassoulet.
Suitable for Vegans, Biodynamic
