Description
In a nutshell:
A half bottle of an attractive and quite delicious Sauternes, Bordeaux's famous dessert wine.
The lowdown:
Château Briatte is a real gem. They produce unfailingly appealing Sauternes which is great early drinking and always good value. It has rich aromas of honey, quince, apricot, acacia flower and ripe citrus fruits of orange and grapefruit and a palate which is smooth and rich with subtle, balanced acidity that cuts through to the finish. It's always worth having a bottle of this within reach.
The Producer:
Château Briatte is situated in the heart of the Sauternes appellation, just west of Preignac. Here Michel Roudes is the third generation to manage the property which comprises eighteen hectares of vineyards largely planted with Semillon along with a small amount of Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris Muscadelle. Yields in this area are typically as low as 8hl/ha and as a result their wines offer remarkable value. This estate is certainly an excellent source of good value Sauternes.
When to drink:
Of course this is ideally suited to rich deserts or blue cheese but, going off at a tangent it's also excellent with sea bream carpaccio.
