Description
In a nutshell:
A light, unoaked and fresh Chardonnay from the Central Loire Valley, France.
The lowdown:
This deliciously clean and crisp Loire Valley Chardonnay comes from vineyards located between the villages of Valencay and Cheverny, on primarily limestone-based soils. Chardonnay grown in these parts would typically be blended with the likes of Sauvignon Blanc, but this one is 100% single variety, made without the use of oak and has all the characteristic Loire flinty minerality. All this this makes it a superb alternative to Chablis since it comes with a somewhat lighter price tag.
The Producer:
Raphaël Midoir's estate sits in the village of Chémery, about an hours drive south of Tours, and he's the fifth generation of his family to look after things. There are around 30 hectares of vines of which about two-thirds are white varieties and the remainder red from which he makes reliably good wines for pleasingly modest prices.
When to drink:
Great on it's own, it'll also pair well with seafood dishes or creamy, soft cheeses.
