Description
Champagne
Brut
ABV 12.0% - 75.0cl
In a Nutshell:
GrowerChampagne from the Côte des Bar led by ripe Pinot Noir fruit, creamy texture and a fresh, balanced finish.
The Lowdown:
If Champagne had neighbourhoods, the Côte des Bar would be Pinot Noir's patch. Further south than the Marne and sharing the same Kimmeridgian soils as Chablis, it gives the grape extra warmth and a rounder expression. Bernard Robert's Réserve captures that character in a blend led by Pinot Noir with supporting roles from Chardonnay and Meunier. Red apple and stone fruit come through, with a touch of brioche from lees ageing, all wrapped in a creamy mousse with fresh acidity running through. Its generous without being heavy, a Champagne that shows both breadth and lift in equal measure.
The Producer:
In the Aubes Côte des Bar, Bernard Robert are one of the area's impressive Grower Champagne producers. Founded in 1945 and based in Voigny, third-generation Sébastien is currently at the helm. They farm 30 hectares across nearby communes on chalk-limestone, practising lutte raisonnée and growing Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Meunier and a touch of Pinot Blanc. The house style is Pinot Noir-led, clean and supple, with extended lees ageing for finesse and yields reliably skilful results.
When to Drink:
Excellent as an aperitif or with lighter dishes such as shellfish, charcuterie or poultry, where its fruit and freshness meet in the middle.
