Chamonix Greywacke Chardonnay 2022
Carefully oaked and beautifully balanced - Franschhoek Chardonnay with ripe fruit, bright acidity, and a touch of well-judged spice.
The Lowdown
This Chardonnay of Chamonix's is a more Old World and Burgundian take on things. The grapes they use are softly crushed then fermented in French oak barrels for around 3 weeks, before being matured for a further 12 months on its lees while being regularly stirred to impart extra mouthfeel and complexity. The resulting wine has buckets of tropical fruit and grapefruit aromas which mingle with hints of oatmeal, caramel and nutmeg. It's nicely understated and with a medium-to-full body its richly complex fruit flavours flow into a mellow, elegant finish.
The Occasion
It's elegant and restrained character make it a superb match to pork, poultry and feathered game dishes.
The Producer
Situated above the fertile Franschhoek valley Chamonix Wine Farm is all about place. They aim at authentic old world-styles of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc that are full of grace and elegance. Since being acquired by German-born entrepreneur and adventurer Chris Hellinger two decades ago, the estate has undergone tremendous improvements, and in addition to their top quality they offer visitors a host of culinary and recreational options in spectacular surroundings. Heading up the winemaking team is the talented Niel Bruwer.
