Castello di Fonterutoli 'Siepi', Toscana 2017
From Fonterutoli's legendary estate, where tradition meets ambition. Siepi is a bold Tuscan blend that weaves elegance, power and heart.
The Lowdown
This one is among the cohort of premium wines that came to be called 'Super Tuscan'. Grown in the heart of Chianti it's a blend of half Sangiovese and Merlot from Mazzei's Siepi vineyard. The vineyard itself is in one of the area's most favoured locations with regards altitude, aspect and soil, making it ideal for a premium wine. It's intense and elegant with plenty of backberry fruit, dark chocolate and warm spices. It has a haunting complexity of structure with a good concentration of flavour and nicely supple tannins.
The Occasion
Still in its early years, this will mature and age wonderfully well over the next decade and beyond.
The Producer
The Mazzei family has been the proud owners of Castello di Fonterutoli, one of Tuscany's premier estates, since 1435. Known for their exceptional Chianti Classico wines, they've also been pioneers in the Super Tuscan movement. In the 1990s, they expanded their horizons by acquiring the Belguardo estate in Maremma, and in 2003, they added the Zisola property in Sicily to their portfolio. This gives them a remarkable collection of Italian wineries, producing premium wines from both the north and south of the country. It's an impressive legacy, seamlessly blending history with innovation in the wine world.
