Description
In a nutshell:
An understated yet rich and complex 'Super Tuscan' from a famous estate.
The lowdown:
The blend of grapes used here in Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot making this something of a Bordeaux Blend, yet made in the heart of Tuscany. Each variety is vinified and aged in oak for 12 month separately before blending and bottling. The nose is quite concentrated and rich with balsamic and liquorice notes in tandem with some sweet dark fruit aromas. The palate has generous ripe blackcurrant flavours with a of coffee and mint while the fine, silky tannins give an excellent structure during the long, lingering, savoury finish.
The Producer:
Angelo Gaja, the renowned wine personality made an impact on Italy's wine industry that can hardly be overestimated when he took the reins of his family's estate back in 1970. On taking control he replanted many of the vineyards and controversially introduced varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay on to land previously the domain of Nebbiolo and other indigenous varieties. His heresy, however, paid off handsomely to the point where he became virtual royalty of the Italian wine industry. In the 1990s they expanded out of their Piedmontese base with the purchase of the Pieve di Santa Restitua estate in Montalcino where their first Brunello di Montalcino was made in 1993. And then in 1996, the Ca' Marcanda estate also in Tuscany has been added to the fold.
When to drink:
A lush, attractive and very appealing wine. Pair it with roast lamb, or at the end of a meal with ripe creamy cheeses.
