Description
In a nutshell:
Forget subtle - this is a flavour explosion of sun-drenched fruit, perfect for when you need a bit of California cheer.
The lowdown:
This California Zinfandel offers a burst of juicy dark fruit on the nose - damsons lead the way, with hints of cracked black pepper adding complexity. The palate is full-bodied and well-balanced, brimming with robust blackberry and plum flavours, softened by a touch of creamy oak. Made from Lodi grapes, it's fermented in stainless steel tanks before a short oak ageing period, resulting in a wine that's both fruit-forward and approachable. Despite its richness, there's a freshness that keeps it lively. This is a crowd-pleasing Zin that punches above its weight.
The Producer:
Boutinot, the guys responsible for this wine, is a big name in the UK's wine scene and are behind many labels seen on shelves up and down the country. Paul Boutinot kicked things off in 1980, starting with importing wines and soon partnering with winemakers around the globe. They've since gone on to produce their own wines from places like the Rhône Valley, Italy, South Africa and many other places. Their secret is in backing passionate winemakers who aren't afraid to push the envelope, always aiming for wines that really capture the essence of their regions. This, along with providing excellent value for money, is something they've really nailed.
When to drink:
A generous red like this, packed with bold fruit and a good bit of spice, is the perfect match for a homemade burger piled high. or some hearty sausages and mash for a comforting supper. A real treat, and a bargain to boot.
