Description
In a nutshell:
A benchmark example of a South African Bordeaux blend from the Constantia region.
The lowdown:
Blends based on the Bordeaux varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot have long been a speciality of the Cape and this example from Buitenverwachting pretty much has the style nailed. Predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon the wine was aged in second and third fill French oak barrels for about two years following fermentation. There are ripe, dark cassis aromas along with hints of blackcurrant leaf which follow on to the palate. There's a good minerality giving a pleasant freshness and grippy, well-tuned tannins for structure and a gentle fragrace on the finish.
The Producer:
Wine growing at Buitenverwachting goes back to the early days of South Africa's history. The first Dutch governor of the colony, Simon van der Stel, planted vines here in 1685 on what was originally the Constantia Estate. Over the years it was subdivided and now forms five wineries of which Buitenverwachting is one. The recent story of the estate began in 1980 when it was acquired by Richard and Christine Müller. They set about restoring the rundown farm and vineyards and created one of the most beautiful estates in the Constantia, and in the process building an enviable reputation for their wines. The first harvest was in 1985 when the focus was on white wines, but over time they've added substantial plantings of varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot which have met with considerable success. Lars Maack, son of Richard and Christine, is largely responsible for running the estate these days. Buitenverwachting means 'beyond expectation' and is a pretty fair description of their wines.
When to drink:
Ripe and welcoming it's very good value and will go well with lamb and pork recipes or meaty pasta dishes.
