Bourgogne Pinot Noir 'Les Fortunes', Chanzy 2023

From Chanzy's Côte Chalonnaise vineyards this delicious Pinot Noir has a lovely balance of vibrant character and understated elegance. Spending about nine months maturing in mostly old oak, it picks up just a hint of tannic structure, enough to give it shape without overshadowing its natural finesse. The nose is all bright red fruits, leading to lively cherry and wild berry flavours, rounded off with gentle earthy undertones. Silky, refined tannins tie it together beautifully, making it a really agreeable red Burgundy with a little bit of polish.

This goes a treat with roasted duck, mushroom risotto, or herb-crusted lamb, as its lively red fruit and earthy notes bring out the best in these savoury, umami-rich dishes. Also great just by itself.

Maison Chanzy has been based in the village of Bouzeron, the heartland of Burgundy's lesser-known white grape, Aligoté, for close to a century. While the estate's seen a few changes of ownership, it finally settled on the name Chanzy in 1974. With 80 hectares stretching across Côte Chalonnaise, Côte de Beaune, and Côte de Nuits, most of their wines are crafted from their own grapes, keeping everything in-house. Recently, they've ticked off HVE3 certification in 2021 and are now well on their way towards going fully organic, showing a solid commitment to sustainable winemaking from soil to bottle.
