Description
In a nutshell:
A still fresh, elegant yet carefully aged red Burgundy with impressive dark fruit flavours.
The lowdown:
A simply lovely, unassuming Burgundy with vibrant notes of red cherry and raspberry, complemented by savoury, meaty notes its gained from time spent in bottle. Superbly fresh and elegant with impressive structure and subtle tannins. This cuvée is named after Bertrand Ambroises star sign, and he only produces it in good vintages. Coming from the oldest vines within the Bourgogne appellation, in the commune of Nuits-Saint-Georges, the grapes are grouped together with parcels from other Cote d'Or villages, Pommard, Volnay, Beaune and Marsanney, which produce quantities too small to be vinified separately. The wine is aged for 15 months in 500 litre oak casks. A wonderful example of Bourgogne Pinot Noir which finishes long and complex.
The Producer:
Maison Ambroise is based in the small village of Premeaux-Prissey just south of the Côtes de Nuits town of Nuits-St-Georges. Bertrand Ambroise, the owner, took it over in 1987 and now runs things with his son François and daughter Ludivine. They have 21 hectares in total and most of their wines are from Côte de Nuits appellations. Since 2013, when they achieved Ecocert certification, all their vineyards have been farmed organically and this is a cornerstone of the sustainable approach to their viticulture. Bertrand uses a good proportion of new oak in the domaine's winemaking and big, bold flavours are one of their trademarks. Their whites make ideal early drinking wines whereas the reds are capable of ageing well and developing a fine complexity along the way.
When to drink:
Beautifully mature this is perfect drinking right now and would suit poultry or white meat dishes.
