Bourgogne Chardonnay 'Couvent des Jacobins', Louis Jadot 2023
A Chardonnay for those who like a touch of creaminess and sheen without going the whole buttery Côte de Beaune way.
The Lowdown
Couvent des Jacobins is one of Jadot’s always-reliable, benchmark whites. The fruit comes from the southerly Mâconnais and Chalonnaise regions, and while it has that southern Burgundy lightness of touch, there’s also some creamy depth courtesy of a bit of oak ageing. It’s by no means the full-on buttery oakiness of the Côte de Beaune, but there’s a decent bit of substance there and, combining that with its pear and peachy fruitiness, it’s a nicely put-together wine.
The Occasion
Versatile and easy-going – good on its own and has the weight to work well at the table too. Spot on with roast chicken, chicken in a creamy mushroom or tarragon sauce, pork loin or baked white fish with a bit of richness.
The Producer
Maison Louis Jadot is one of Burgundy’s classic old-guard houses, founded in Beaune in 1859, and its labels are recognisable to wine drinkers the world over. Based in Burgundy’s wine capital, their name is built around tradition and dependability. They are both négociant and grower, and have a chunky 150 hectares of vineyards under their control, much of that made up of serious Premier and Grand Cru sites. While they have excellent wines from all over the region, the Côte de Beaune remains their strength, though in more recent years some impressive additions in the Côte de Nuits have added more strings to their bow.
