Description
At a Glance:
| Fruity & Bright White | Dry | Light-Medium Body | Oaked | Vegan | Languedoc-Roussillon | ABV 14.5% | 75cl |
In a Nutshell:
Small-batch Hérault white from Grenache Gris - textured, dry and delicately aromatic, with a story to match its scarcity.
The Lowdown:
Grenache Gris is a grape that rarely takes the spotlight, but this small-production white from the hills above La Livinière makes a good case for it. Long used in fortified wines, the it's been rethought here by the team at Boulevard Napoléon. Fermented and aged in seasoned French oak, the wine is dry, subtly textured and savoury, with soft orchard fruit, a touch of spice, and a gently mineral finish. It was the first wine they ever made, and it remains something of a signature - though only modest amounts are made it's in steady demand. It's helped shine a light on a once-overlooked variety, with a style and character that feels assured and refreshingly individual.
The Producer:
The man behind Boulevard Napoléon is British restaurateur Trevor Gulliver, best known for establishments such as The Fire Station in Waterloo, Smithfield, and Bread and Wine, as well as several other food and drink related enterprises. The wine making operation is situated in the village of La Livinière in the hills of the Minervois in the Languedoc, which happens to be close to his southern French holiday home. While the scale is pretty small, as with all his projects, it's a high-quality operation and one in which he partnered with renowned winemaker Benjamin Darnault. All the wines come from old vineyards in the La Livinière appellation. The quantities produced are always limited and each is a classic expression of what can be produced on the dry, stony slopes of this part of the south of France. They have a vibrancy and definition that marks them out from the crowd.
When to Drink:
Great with grilled prawns, fennel salad or white beans - anything fresh and herby tends to do the trick.
