Description
In a nutshell:
Wonderfully fresh, fruity and soft Rhône-style red from the Central Coast region of California.
The lowdown:
Le Cigare Volant is a classic Southern Rhône-style blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah from the Central Coast region. The Grenache is pretty and fragrant, the Cinsault is co-fermented with the Syrah and together they compliment each other brilliantly well with the tannin of the Syrah giving more structure of the Cinsault and the different fruit notes of the two working in tandem. Intense aromas of fresh, ripe plum and strawberry with touches of liquorice and savoury spice. The palate is medium-bodied and fresh with balanced acidity, light tannins and great fruit concentration. Really well-made, moreish wine.
The Producer:
Bonny Doon is an iconic Californian winery founded by the legendary Randall Grahm in the 1980s who was inspired by Chateauneuf-du-Pape and became a pioneer in the use of Rhône varietals in the Central Coast; one of the original 'Rhône Ranger' winemakers. Bonny Doon's grapes are grown with respect to biodynamics and great care is taken with respect to the vineyard soils in particular, their wines always try and showcase 'terroir' as do the great wines of the old world.
When to drink:
A versatile wine. Try with charcuterie, aubergine parmegiana, or medium-rare steak.
Suitable for Vegans, Biodynamic
