Description
In a nutshell:
Soft and fragrant, this South African Gewurztraminer is a spot on example of the variety.
The lowdown:
Quite simply, this is good quality, textbook Gewurztraminer. Pleasantly floral on the nose, it doesn't overdo the aromatics, and it feels nicely soft and full in the mouth with the characteristic lychee, rose and violet flavours all held in balance with a subtle citrus acidity. Once pressed the juice was kept in contact with skins for about 4 hours which helped bring on all the exotic flavours and fragrances. South Africa mightn't be where you'd expect classic Gewurztraminer to come from, but don't let that deter you, this is right on the money.
The Producer:
Bon Courage Estate sits in the heart of the beautiful Robertson valley, an area that's well suited to white wines in particular and where reds are also quite up and coming. A family concern since 1927, they're currently headed up by the 3rd generation in the shape of Jacques Bruwer and during his time in charge of the vineyards and winery they've regularly picked up awards. The diverse soils on the estate allow them to grow quite a number of varieties and their range of wines is consequently pretty extensive.
When to drink:
It's light enough to enjoy all by itself and, with food, spicy asian dishes are just the ticket.
Suitable for Vegans
