Description
In a nutshell:
Rich and concentrated, this Old Vine Zinfandel is packed with blackberry, plum, and black pepper, with a touch of vanilla and a velvety finish - classic California.
The lowdown:
Old vines make for seriously concentrated Zinfandel, and with these dry-farmed vines clocking in at 60 to 80 years old, there's no shortage of richness here. Small, low-yielding grape clusters bring big, ripe fruit flavours, sweet spice, and, here, even a touch of Black Forest gateau. A year in American oak adds a bit of softness and a gentle touch of spice to keep it balanced without overdoing it. Bold and full of character, but still nicely vibrant and a good way to get a feel of what old-vine Zinfandel is all about.
The Producer:
Bogle Vineyards are a real family enterprise in every sense of the word. It was Captain AJ Bogle, an American Civil War veteran who first arrived in California in the 1870s, that started things off. He became a fruit farmer in the California Delta and passed his business down through the generations. However, they lost the business during the Great Depression of the 1930s. It wasn't until after the war that father and son Warren and Chris Bogle (the 4th and 5th generations) acquired land and planted their first vineyards in Clarksburg, California in 1965 since when they've grown steadily over the years from less than 10 hectares to the point where they now have more than 600 hectares of vines across the region. The estate is now overseen by Chris Bogle's sons Warren Junior and Ryan and daughter Jody. Warren looks after viticulture and Eric Aafedt, who has been with Bogle since 1994 is the head winemaker. All their vineyards are sustainably farmed and their wines enjoy an enviable reputation both in their home market and overseas.
When to drink:
Big and mouthfilling, it's just the ticket for smoky barbecued ribs, chargrilled steak, or a proper juicy burger - bold enough to take on all those flame-grilled flavours.
Suitable for Vegans
