Vallejo Avenas Chardonnay 2022

Most of the Chardonnay in Utiel-Requena goes into Cava, so still versions are a bit of a rarity, but when they're like this, you have to wonder why more people aren't making them. Fermented in barrel and aged in large oak foudres, it develops a touch of creaminess and a subtle nutty edge. Aromas of ripe peaches, a squeeze of citrus, and a hint of pineapple make for an inviting start, while fresh stone fruit and gentle nuttiness carry onto the silky, smooth palate. Beautifully balanced, with bright freshness and a finish that lingers, it shows that Chardonnay has earned its place in this part of Spain.

Works pretty well just on its own, but even better with roast chicken in a creamy tarragon sauce, buttery pork medallions, or wild mushroom risotto - the silky texture and bright freshness handle richness like a pro.
