The Lowdown
Malvasia is a grape that pops up all over the Mediterranean, Portugal, and the Canaries, but in Utiel-Requena, west of Valencia, it's a bit of a rarity - making this all the more intriguing. Grown at a lofty 1,000m and aged for four months in large oak foudres, it has an intense, fragrant nose of ripe peach, orange blossom, and a touch of nuttiness. Those stone fruit notes carry through on the palate - peach, lychee, and a hint of red apple - leading to a long, fresh, and aromatic finish. Layered and textural yet always elegant, it's got depth, finesse, and self-assurance.
The Occasion
A food-friendly sort of Malvasia, this works brilliantly with things like citrusy ceviche, grilled prawns with lemon, or lightly spiced Moroccan chicken. Fresh yet layered, it's more than capable of keeping up with bold flavours without showing off.
The Producer
Founded near Valencia in 1927, Bodegas Murviedro has grown into one of the region's most forward-thinking wineries. Much of that is down to head winemaker Víctor Marqués, whose focus on quality has helped shake off the area's former backwater reputation. Their range is impressively broad, making the most of both indigenous and international grape varieties. By blending modern techniques with the region's traditional character, they produce wines that are fresh, approachable, and unmistakably Spanish, showing that innovation and authenticity can go hand in hand.
