Description
In a nutshell:
A rounded and concentrated skin contact white, or 'Orange' wine from near Valencia on Spain's East coast.
The lowdown:
White wines such as this which are fermented on their skins stand out by being fuller in flavour and, err, a bit 'orangey' in colour. They've certainly made a mark, especially for those who like a bit of extra character and depth.
Enblanco is a 50-50 mix of Grenache Blanc and Grenache Gris, hand harvested and fermented on the skins in large 1,000 litre amphora, the skins giving the wine a bit of added colour, light tannins, and an extra whack of flavour. Thanks to being grown at altitude the nights are cold, and that big difference in day and night time temperature means there is also plenty of natural acidity adding balance and backbone. Punchy aromas of stone fruits, minerals and anise, along with apricot and citrus notes. The palate is rounded and refreshing with lively acidity and elegant, concentrated flavours.
The Producer:
Rosalia Molina, winemaker at and owner of Bodegas Altolandon, one of Spain's highest altitude wineries, crafts organic wines that truly capture the essence of DO Manchuela. At 1,100 metres above sea level, in central eastern Spain, her vineyards experience extreme day-night temperature swings, promoting even ripening and retaining natural acidity. Committed to biodiversity, Rosalia welcomes chickens, sheep, and pigs from local farms to roam freely, while using only natural fertilisers. The grapes are hand-harvested and vinified with minimal intervention, relying on native yeasts. Aged in clay amphora and French oak, her wines reflect a balance of texture, complexity, and the unique character of this high-altitude region. The result of all this? A range of accessible, well-made organic wines that offer great value without skimping on quality.
When to drink:
Great as an aperitif with nuts (especially almonds) and olives, but try with baked fish, and especially North African and Middle Eastern lamb or goat based dishes.
Suitable for Vegans, Biodynamic
