The Lowdown
Made from Georgia's native Saperavi grape and partly vinified and aged in traditional clay qvevri, oak barrels and stainless steel, this red is a real discovery. It kicks off with a savoury, spicy nose with blackberries, herbs, and a hint of black pepper. On the palate, it's juicy and creamy, packed with ripe black fruit, soft tannins, and a bright acidity that keeps it fresh - think of it as somewhere between a Malbec and a Zinfandel. It's a wine that really grows on you, giving fantastic value and a taste of Georgian winemaking at its best.
The Occasion
Pair it with beef goulash or stuffed cabbage rolls, where its bold berry notes and earthy depth match the rich, savoury flavours beautifully.
The Producer
Bedoba is a Georgian wine project with roots in one of the oldest winemaking traditions in the world — yet for much of the 20th and 21st centuries, Georgia barely registered on the international stage. Swiss wine professional Thierry Fontannaz, who has spent his career in the trade, knew an overlooked opportunity when he saw one. He teamed up with Georgian winemaker Nugzar Ksovreli of the Kakheti Wine Company — whose knowledge of traditional qvevri winemaking runs deep — and between them they've set about giving Georgian wine the wider audience it's been lacking.
