Description
In a nutshell:
An intense and warming Sicilian red with a bit of extra richness.
The lowdown:
The fruit for this is grown in vineyards at the hot, western tip of Sicily from a blend of 70% Nero d'Avola and 30% Frappato grapes. The Nero d'Avola grapes were left to hang longer on the vines before picking to encourage a light withering and natural de-hydration which gives the finished wine an extra concentration of flavours. There are bright, intense red fruits aromas on the nose with a deep, rich, warming, full-bodied palate of dark cherry, raisin and sweet spice leading up to a lovely smooth and silky finish.
The Producer:
Situated in the town of Nuova Gibellina at the western end of Sicily Baglio Gibellina make a range of excellent wines using local and international varieties in the surrounding hilly vineyards of Trapani. They're a part of the Biscardo group of wineries and and were taken on board by Maurizio Biscardo after he was impressed by the quality of their fruit and potential for quality. Their wines are characterised by an easy drinkability, aromatic purity and, in particular, exceptional value for money.
An interesting footnote is that their home, Nuova Gibellina, is a new town that was built from scratch about seven miles from the original settlement of Gibellina which was destroyed in a series of earthquakes in 1968 which demonstrates the seismically active nature of the local terrain.
When to drink:
Big and mouthfilling it's a great partner to hearty flavoured dishes and meaty pasta dishes.
Suitable for Vegans
