Description
In a nutshell:
This wickedly wonderful Western Cape Chenin Blanc is a surprisingly full-bodied and juicy take.
The lowdown:
Picture ripe lemons and peaches with a subtle, savoury edge - this South African white is a bit different. It's a small-batch Chenin Blanc. Most of the fruit comes from a top Paarl vineyard and aged in 600l French oak demi-muids, but there's a twist - a splash of Wildeberg's quirky, ceramic egg fermented Wit Chenin is in there as well. Winemaker JD Rossouw likes to experiment, and you can taste it in the mix of textures thrown together here. It's zesty and crisp, but surprisingly rich too. If you're up for trying something a little off the beaten track, this is a bit of a find.
The Producer:
Wildeberg Wines, nestled in South Africa's Franschhoek valley, thrive under the watchful eye of winemaker JD Rossouw. Here they craft their wines from both local vineyards and those further afield. As part of South Africa's Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) system, their practices are environmentally friendly, and their participation in the Cape's Old Vine Project highlights their commitment to preserving vines over 35 years old. JD also experiments with lesser-known varieties and cutting-edge techniques, showcased under their SKU (Strange Companjie Unlimited) label. They're good for a fresh and innovative take on things.
When to drink:
Versatile enough to be enjoyed chilled on its own, or alongside anything from simple roast chicken to a steaming bowl of mussels.
Suitable for Vegans
