Aperol
The famous orange, bitter-sweet herbal aperitivo from Italy
Vegan
The Lowdown
One of the world's most popular aperitivos is made to a secret recipe, unchanged since 1919, which include rhubarb and oranges together with several different herbs and other flavourings and it comes in at a modest 11% ABV. Bright orange in colour it has a unique bitter-sweet taste and combined with prosecco and a splash of soda water it makes the classic Aperol Spritz.
The Producer
Aperol was originally created in 1919 by brothers Luigi and Silvio Barbieri of Padua in northern Italy. While gaining something of a following in its home country it wasn't until the dawn of the 1950s that it first came to prominence and it was during that decade the famous Aperol Spritz first appeared. In the early 2000s the business was acquired by Gruppo Campari, makers of Italy's other famous bitter aperitif, which was pretty much at the start of the 'Spritz Revolution' after which time they've never looked back.
