Description
Argentina
Firm & Spicy Red
Medium-Full Body - Unoaked
Vegan - ABV 14.0% - 75.0cl
In a Nutshell:
Inky, high-altitude Tannat from Salta: dark fruit, spice and firm structure, a moodier counterpoint to Malbec.
The Lowdown:
Tannat is the serious and brooding alternative to the crowd-pleasing Malbec that dominates these parts. In Salta, grown at dizzying altitude, it takes on a deeply coloured, muscular style, but with a lift and freshness that sets it apart from the denser, more robust versions across the border in Uruguay. This is all dark fruit - blackberry and plum - wrapped up with spice, liquorice and a touch of earthiness. The palate is concentrated and firmly structured, yet there's a balance here that keeps it from feeling heavy. Powerful, precise and thoroughly characterful.
The Producer:
El Porvenir - literally "The Future" - has been the name of this Cafayate estate since it was founded in 1890, though its real turning point came a century later when the Romero-Marcuzzi family restored its vineyards and winery. Perched at around 1,900 metres above sea level, and guarded by 200-year-old cacti the size of telegraph poles, their old vines produce Torrontés, Malbec, Tannat and blends with remarkable intensity. The fierce mountain sun gives deep colour, while frosty dawns and warm afternoons soften edges and keep things fresh. Today Lucía Romero Marcuzzi, Francisco "Paco" Puga and Daniel Guillén lead the estate.
When to Drink:
At its best with red meat - steak, lamb, slow-cooked beef - though decanting helps if drinking young.
