Description
In a nutshell:
A complex and full bodied red from the Macedonia region of north west Greece.
The lowdown:
Xinomavro is a dark indigenous Greek variety that makes wines that age really well. This example from a single parcel of old vines, Barba Yannis, is one that shows it at its best. Aromas of smoky black fruit mingle with strawberries, dark cherries and a delicate spiciness. On the palate it's full bodied with a rich depth of fruit, lovely savoury notes and a touch of oak. The velety tannins lead onto a long and aromatic finish.
The Producer:
Alpha Estate is the brainchild of vine grower Makis Mavridis and talented, Bordeaux trained wine maker Angelos Latrides. The estate is located in the cool highlands of Western Macedonia where the altitudes approach 600. Here they have 120 hectares of vines and employ up to the minute vineyard techniques and winemaking technology to make seriously impressive wines from a mix of French and native Greek varietals. The combined effects of steady north westerly breezes, low rainfall and sandy, low fertility creates an ideal terroir giving Makis and Angelos the tools to make some of the best Greek wines youll find.
When to drink:
This powerful wine is one to be taken seriously and while drinking well now will keep well right into the late 2020s.
