AJ Adam Dhroner Riesling Trocken, Mosel 2023
A dry, crisp, small production Riesling from the Dhron Valley in the Mosel.
The Lowdown
This is a Trocken, or dry, style Riesling from old vines of about 45 years from the renowned Hofberg site. Working in a minimal interventionist way the grapes are picked in mid-October and then gently pressed before half is vinified in stainless steel and the other half in Fuders (large traditional oak casks) with ageing on lees. Bone dry, lean and tense at first then opening up with riper more tropical notes, a lovely honeyed ripeness and a creamy textural quality to the body, thanks to the lees aging.
The Occasion
A super dry Riesling, try with sushi or Thai dishes.
The Producer
Weingut A.J. Adam sits in the Dhron Valley, a tributary of the Mosel, and not too far from the border with Luxembourg. The steep, southwest facing slopes on which many of their vineyards lie have long been recognized as premium locations. Andreas Adam’s' grandfather owned a small parcel of vines from where, at the age of 21 in the year 2000, he produced his first vintage. In the subsequent years he acquired further vineyards and now has a total of 5 hectares across the the Dhron and Piesporter areas. Andreas now runs the estate along with his sister Barbara and between them they produce some excellent Mosel wines, the only downside being that, because of their small size, they only seen in limited quantities.
