Description
In a nutshell:
Deep amber German Smoked Wheat Beer from Sclenkerla of Bamberg, Bavaria.
The lowdown:
Schlenkerla, a brew pub from Bamberg, brew a range of smoked beers, which are a regional speciality and something of an acquired taste. As with most Bavarian wheat beers it's brewed with a mixture of both barley and wheat and is deep amber in colour with characteristic smoked meat aromas and wheat beer yeastiness.
The Brewery:
Located in the Bavarian city of Bamberg, Schlenkerla must rank as one of Germany's most unique, if not historic, breweries. The brewery is located within a 12th century inn which originally gained its name from a brewer with a rather wobbly schlenkernd gait. Their three main brews of urbock, marzen and weizen all share the signature smoked style. A pilsner has been introduced relatively recently and although brewed from unsmoked grain, its proximity to the smoking operation indeed leads to the inevitable house style. Famously, draught ale is still served from oak casks at the brewery.
Style - Bock, Marzen & Festbiers ABV 5.2% - Moderate Strength
