Description
In a nutshell:
Unoaked and light bodied this delicious Greek red is full of ripeness and sweet spiciness.
The lowdown:
While made to be fresh and carefree drinking, which it achieves with ease, there's also richness and silkiness as well which makes this a pretty good drop for the modest price tag. It's a blend of two native Greek varieties, Agiorgitiko and Mavroudi which are perfectly at home in the far south-east corner of the Peloponnese peninsula. After fermentation it's matured on its lees which gives that added texture and complexity elevating it above the level of just being a refreshing quaffer.
The Producer
The Laconia peninsula in the far southeast of the Peloponnese was, until the Tsimbidi family started up the Monemvasia Winery in 1997, a neglected corner of Greek wine heritage. It was from this region that the white grape variety Malvasia, which has gone on to be planted across the world, originated. The objective was to return it to its homeland and recommence production in its native land. Having made a success of that they've gone on to plant over 120 hectares of this and other native varieties and their wines now command a growing reputation both at home and abroad.
When to drink:
A great wine to pair with poultry and meatier fish, or a charcuterie board.
Suitable for Vegans
