Vidiano is a variety indigenous to this Mediterranean island and this gorgeous example from Vasilis Laderos' and Kalliopi Volitaki's small winery really captures what it's all about. There are hints of ripe pear, melon and even a touch of banana coupled with a refreshing acidity which balances it all very well. The texture is firm with a bit of minerality, but the lasting impression is of a very generously flavoured wine with a pleasant herbal fragrance.

Sitting in the heart of Crete, the Idaia Winery is a charming boutique operation in the village of Venerato. Founded in 2000 by husband-and-wife duo Vassilis Laderos and Kalliopi Volitaki, Idaias focus is firmly on the island's native grape varieties and rich winemaking traditions. With around 30 hectares of organically farmed vines, the couple is dedicated to sustainable practices. They also work closely with small growers in the Dafnes area, ensuring their wines truly capture the essence of Crete. Their approach to their craft makes them a great standard bearer for Cretan wines as a whole.
When to drink:
It's great with classic Mediterranean cuisine, seafood dishes, or goats cheese.
