Southern Portuguese warmth and substance

There was a time when the vineyards of southern Portugal were a backwater when it came to quality wine. That's not something you can say these days. The Alentejo, south-east of Lisbon, has been transformed into one of the country's most ambitious wine areas.

And when it comes to reds this is a good time of year to shine a light on what they have to offer.

The region is all about blends rather than individual varieties, and our pick this month, Cas' Amaro Duas Osgas Tinto, brings together three of the most popular – Aragonez (aka Tempranillo), Castelão and Trincadeira. It's unoaked, but there's warmth and depth all the same, with dark ripe fruits and a savoury undercurrent leading the way. And while it's by no means a big blockbuster, it's got the body to go along well with rich, hearty dishes.

As an example of what this relatively undiscovered part of Portugal has to offer, this is a good one - and it's great value at the same time.
