Full-bodied and concentrated is a succinct and generally fair description for most Primitivo. And our choice for March’s Wine of the Month isn’t one that’s going to challenge that idea. That’s not to say it’s just a big bruiser – far from it – because there’s an elegance, freshness and complexity about it that adds a few more layers of interest.
Primitivo is actually the same grape variety as California’s Zinfandel and, interestingly, the man behind A Mano Wines is Californian, Mark Shannon. He’s been largely responsible for rescuing the fortunes of Puglian Primitivo in recent years. The quality of the wines he makes has encouraged other producers to up their game which has helped put these wines firmly back on the map. As a good value example of benchmark Primitivo this is one of the first ones to reach for.
