White Wines

Chablis, Domaine William Fevre 2020
Single Price: £23.00
Mixed 6 Price: £21.00

In a nutshell: An outstanding Chablis from one of the region's finest producers.
The lowdown: Care and attention to detail is one of the hallmarks of William Fèvre and it certainly shows in their 'Domaine' Chablis. All the fruit for this wine is hand-harvested and lightly pressed to maximize freshness. A very small proportion, about 5-10%, of the wine is vinified and aged in French oak barrels which gives the characteristic Fèvre hint of creaminess to the finished wine. It has aromas of citrus fruits and green apple leading on to a dry, supple palate with vibrant fruit, mineral flavours and a fresh, clean acidity.
When to drink: An elegant yardstick by which a lot of other Chablis is measured. Chicken, creamy pasta and fish dishes are good pairings here.

Ladoix Le Clou D'Orge Blanc, Louis Jadot 2018
Single Price: £29.00
Mixed 6 Price: £26.00

In a nutshell: Fresh, ripe and very elegant white Burgundy from the Côte de Beaune village of Ladoix.
The lowdown: The northern Côte de Beaune appellation of Ladoix is probably one of the lesser known in the region, sitting between its two famous neighbours Aloxe-Corton to the south and Nuits-Saint-Georges to the north, but has produced excellent wines for centuries. While most of the production is red some lovely whites are also made, including this Ladoix from the single vineyard of Clou D'Orge sitting on stony, southerly facing slopes. From the excellent 2018 vintage the grapes were hand harvested before undergoing fermentation and maturation in oak barrels, ageing for 15 months. The result is a very fine wine, a clean and linear style of white Burgundy with great elegance. Aromas of ripe citrus and orange zest, stone fruits of peach and apricot, and touches of woody spice. The palate is fresh and balanced with great minerality running through the wine, fleshy stone fruit and oaky notes, and finished with a long length.
When to drink: Try with crab or baked fish, chicken in cream based sauces, mushroom dishes, or cheeses such as camembert or gruyere.

Pouilly-Fume 'Le Chant des Vignes', Joseph Mellot 2019
Single Price: £15.50
Mixed 6 Price: £14.50

In a nutshell: A classic fresh and zesty Pouilly-Fumé with exotic fruits, grapefruit aromas and flinty minerality.
The lowdown: This is the very essence of how the French make Sauvignon Blanc in one of its traditional homelands alongside the Loire. Fermented at a controlled cool temperature to allow the full, fresh expression of the flavours. Along with the zingy fruitiness and characteristic gunflint aroma, it has a fresh, tropical fruit flavoured palate and an exceptional and very rewarding length in the mouth.
When to drink: A consummately stylish Loire Sauvignon Blanc, it's good with grilled sea bass or fish pie works well or even mildly spicy dishes.

Red Wines

Chateau Boutisse, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2018
Single Price: £26.00
Mixed 6 Price: £24.00

In a nutshell: A big and generous, ripe and fruity Saint-Emilion from a good vintage.
The lowdown: Now firmly established as Saint-Emilion's regularly reliable performers Boutisse continues to go from strength to strength. There's an emphasis on sustainable viticulture and chemical herbicides haven't been used for a number of years now. Still quite modestly priced for a high level Grand Cru Saint-Emilion Boutisse is classically Merlot dominated but has around 10% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend as well. By and large 2018 was a decent vintage here and the resulting fruit was ripe and full. It has a full body, plenty of depth and a great structure. There are ripe red fruits on the palate with cloves and and dry spice aromas. The velvety tannins sit silkily on the tongue and lead up to a satisfyingly lengthy finish.
When to drink: Just about ready to drink, but this vintage will have plenty of longevity so can easily be put away for a few years. Red meats, game and hard cheeses are good accompaniments.

Monemvasios Red, Monemvasia 2013
Single Price: £16.00
Mixed 6 Price: £15.00

In a nutshell: A gloriously aromatic, rounded and balanced Greek red from the far south of the Peloponnese peninsula.
The lowdown: The area this is made is spectacularly scenic and has a history of viticulture going back to ancient times. The Monemvasios Winery make a wide range of wine featuring indigenous grapes of which this is a superb example. It's made mainly from one of Greece's major red varieties, Agiorgtiko, with about 10% Mavroudi and is a wine made to age gracefully. There are plenty of primary fruit flavours there which are complemented by notes of mocha, coffee, vanilla and nutty oak. The ripe and well integrated tannins give it a wonderfully velvety texture during the long lingering finish.
When to drink: An elegant, and complex wine that's a perfect match to red meat dishes, rich pasta recipes and mature cheeses.

Ontanon Reserva, Rioja 2015
Single Price: £15.00
Mixed 6 Price: £14.00

In a nutshell: Graceful and elegant Rioja Reserva with good depth of flavour.
The lowdown: To earn the name Reserva a Rioja must spend a year in oak barriques followed 2 further years in bottle before release. Ontanon's Reserva, which is made from 95% Tempranillo and a dash of Graciano, spends its time in a mix of French and American oak and makes a very good example of type with the high acidity, colour and tannin of the Graciano giving it the ageing potential it requires. It has rich aromas of sweet spice, dark red fruits, cedar and tobacco which give way to a silky palate with subtle oak and succulent raisin flavours, and it finishes with lovely softly integrated tannins.
When to drink: Beautifully structured and perfectly mature this is a Reserva at the peak of its form. Great with things like roast lamb, pork, or turkey or creamy rice dishes like risottos.

Sparkling Wines

Champagne Henriot Brut Souverain NV
Single Price: £32.00
Mixed 6 Price: £29.00

In a nutshell: Brut Souverain is the flagship cuvee of Champagne Henriot, one of the oldest family owned houses.
The lowdown: With around 40% Chardonnay, most of which is grown on the Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims, in the blend, this charming Champagne has a lightness of touch and real elegance. And being aged for three years on its lees and one in bottle before release gives it extra layers of complexity. It's full of honeysuckle and brioche notes and has a surprisingly lengthy finish.
When to drink: A creamy, toasty and sophisticated Champagne which goes well with food as well being a superb aperitif.

Jansz Premium Cuvee NV
Single Price: £18.50
Mixed 6 Price: £16.50

In a nutshell: A rich, complex and full flavoured Australian sparkling wine from Tasmania.
The lowdown: The cool climate growing conditions on Tasmania make it a good place for sparkling wine production which is what Jansz have been doing since 1986 and they're responsible for some of the best sparklers to come from here. This is a blend of 53% Chardonnay, 44% Pinot Noir and a little Pinot Meunier which is given a lengthy lees ageing before disorgement allowing it to develop flavour, complexity and depth. It's got lovely, honeyed apple fruit aromas which mingle with stone fruit, citrus and complex, yeast lees flavours. Rich and creamy on the palate with a delicate fizz and plenty of vibrant acidity on the finish, it's also fresh and elegant with great length.
When to drink: An easy Champagne alternative this makes the ideal aperitif sparkler and, well chilled, is also good with seafood and shellfish.
