For the first two weeks of April, we’re focusing on wines from Rueda as part of D.O Rueda’s #TasteRueda campaign!
This wonderful wine region is situated in Northern Spain. The Rueda appellation is located on high plains, rising to 700 to 800 metres above sea level. It is one of the few wine regions in Europe that is specialised in white wine production and is home to Spain’s best-selling white wine, Verdejo. The Verdejo grape has been grown in the Rueda appellation for over ten centuries.

Diez Siglos, Rueda 2019
In a nutshell: A complex, vibrant Spanish white from the Castilian wine region of Rueda
The lowdown: Until the discovery that the local Verdejo grape could make excellent wine in this part of Castilla y León between Madrid and León Rueda wasn't considered a serious wine region. That's long since changed and their whites, and a few reds, are now firmly on the map. In this wine, the grapes are sourced from old bush vines planted on gravelly soils and are night-harvested to ensure they're cool upon reaching the winery. After fermentation, it's kept on its lees for 4 months to yield a wine with intense aromas of stone fruit, tangerine oil and citrus. It has a rounded and complex palate, with peach and apricot fruit and notes of grass and fennel which leads to a bright and lengthy finish.
When to drink: A very good value wine that's great to drink by itself and is also good with fish, chicken and rice-based dishes.
K-Naia Verdejo, Rueda 2020
In a nutshell: A nose of grapefruit, passion fruit, mandarin oil notes and lightly herbaceous characters.
The lowdown: The palate is rich with minerality, race lime zest acidity and a touch of stone fruit - giving a lovely texture and intensity, and tropical notes on the finish. The grapes come from 98 acres of vineyards, the majority of which are 26 years and some which are older, all located in La Seca.
When to drink: Pairs fantastically with oily fish and seafood.
Bodegas Naia 'Naiades' Verdejo, Rueda 2016
In a nutshell:
Extraordinary rich, complex and rounded expression of the Verdejo grape from western Spain.
The lowdown: A wine to rival Spain's top whites and an ultimate expression of the Verdejo grape variety. While the Rueda wine region and its principal variety Verdejo are known for producing lighter, fresher, easy-drinking wines in the main Bodegas Naia have created a wine that is full-bodied, rich and complex from some very old vines. These vines are incredibly pre-phylloxera bush vines that come from the La Seca cru vineyard, regarded as one of the finest in Rueda for over 100 years, with the grapes being handpicked and fermented in oak before spending seven months on its lees in large 500l French oak barrels.
Intense aromas of ripe melon, pears and candied stone fruit with sweet spice and dried fruity notes. The palate is rich, broad and textural with a creamy softness, integrated oaky flavours and with a precise kiwi, grapefruit acidity that runs through the wine and adds structure and balance. The finish is long and complex with a refreshing subtle bitter twist on the finish.
When to drink:
Drink now with baked sea bass, monkfish, or mushroom risotto
