Introducing New Hall Wines

New Wine from one of the oldest commercial vineyards in the UK.

New Hall Wine Estate is located in the heart of rural Essex, and this little corner, south of Maldon, has an important role in the history of English Wine. The first vineyards in Essex were planted as far back as 1120, where the vine flourished and supplied The Crown. New Hall Wine Estate was officially established in 1969 by owners Bill and Shelia Greenwood, which makes it one of the oldest commercial vineyards in the UK. The first vines to be planted on the estate were Huxelrebe and Muller Thurgau in 1970. Although not commonly seen in UK vineyards these days, there was very little known about vine growing back then, so a lot of guidance was taken from a European country with a similar cooler climate, Germany.

Fast forward to the 70s and New Hall is in a full-steam-ahead direction. In 1976 they started winning the first awards for their wines in the International Wine and Spirit Competition. Seeing the potential this Estate could have, mainly more grape varieties were planted over the course of the next few years. New Hall has continued to go on and win many more awards for their incredible wines, but that’s no surprise, as they have had many years of practice.

They currently have 49 hectares of land under vine, with one of the largest plantings of Bacchus in the UK and an impressive newly-built estate winery. The family-run estate is now in the hands of the third generation. The young, dynamic and internationally experienced team continue the family tradition of nurturing the grapes from vine to glass.

New Hall produces a large range of different styles of wine, from Sparkling whites & roses, still whites, reds and roses and even a limited-edition sweet wine. Compared to other English wines, New Hall has some really great value wines. In our range, we have two still white wines available, but keep an eye on this space, as we will hopefully have more soon.

The Barons Lane White is a dry, fruity and refreshing blend of Huxelrebe, Pinot Blanc and Schonburg. Showing aromas of pear, grapefruit and lemon with notes of honeysuckle and English hedgerow through to a mouth-watering finish. The Single Estate Bacchus is a rich and flavoursome quintessential English wine, a great substitute for New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Showing grapefruit, pear, peach and lime flavours, complemented by herbaceous overtones of nettle and cut grass. Available for £16.50 (Mix 6 Price).
