The latest editions to our ever-growing Snapshot and Explorer's Case range have been created to let you explore the region and wines of Piedmont, in North-West Italy. This region is quite rightly regarded as one of the world’s great wine-producing regions and has been for centuries. From some of the most revered (and expensive) reds such as Barolo, to light and fresh Gavi there really is something for everyone.

Our Explorer’s Cases are designed to showcase and introduce a country, region, style or grape variety in 6 bottles. While our 3 bottle Snapshot Cases are there to give you a bit more of an in-depth insight and comparison.

Piedmont and North West Italy Explorer's Case

A 6 bottle Explorer’s Case that delves into the wonderful world of Piedmontese wines featuring 2 white wines and 4 red.

Piedmont in North-West Italy is one of the world’s great wine-producing regions. From some of the most revered (and expensive) reds such as Barolo to light and fresh Gavi there really is something for everyone. With our Explorer’s Case, we’re going to highlight some of the classics as well as one or two ancient rarities! Starting with the whites we have to have a Gavi and our La Fornace comes from the commune of Tassarolo, north of the town of Gavi itself, and is made by the small family producer Cinzia Bergaglio. Head further north again and we hit the ancient settlement of Tortona where our second white hails from. *Timorasso *is a rare and very old variety producing some extraordinary wines with a richness and lots of stone fruit and citrus notes with touches of spice. Definitely deserving of a bit more attention!

We are currently 40 miles or so due north of Genoa but before we head west past Alessandra to the reds of Asti and Alba we stay in Tortona to showcase another old, forgotten variety, red this time. Regarded as a parent to *Nebbiolo Freisa *once was widely planted but now less than 1000 ha remain in Piedmont. Medium-bodied with ripe fruit, robust tannins and fresh acidity a great wine for stews, grilled meat or sausages.

Now we come to the three main reds of the region. Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto. Nebbiolo, a King of Grapes, pretty much likes some hills in Piedmont and nowhere else. This tricky grape produces some fantastic wines and our Alasia Barolo is a great first, affordable step into these wines. Barbera is the regions most widely planted red variety and while much of it produces light and juicy table wines our Barbera d’Asti ‘Le Orme’ by Michele Chiarlo is a bit more of a serious example with a touch of oak used to add that structure and body. Dolcetto is once again gaining a bit more popularity and while it maybe regarded as the third red of Piedmont our example from top Barolo producer *Francesco Rinaldi *is anything but. From a single vineyard within the Barolo area itself it is fresh, juicy and very well put together.

Piedmont & NW Italy Red Snapshot Case

A 3 bottle Snapshot Case featuring 3 different red wines each made from one of the 3 main great Piedmontese red varieties.

The Italian region of Piedmont in North-West Italy is quite rightly regarded as one of the world’s great wine-producing regions, and has been for centuries. From the renowned wines of Barolo and Barbaresco to popular everyday reds like Barbers d’Asti Piedmont has something for everyone. Nebbiolo is regarded as a King of Grapes and produces some of the world’s most expensive wines. It is a tricky and sensitive grape to grow that likes a few hills in Piedmont and pretty much nowhere else! Our Langhe Nebbiolo is an approachable, affordable entry into this variety with its enticing aromatics and smooth medium body.

Our second wine is made from Barbera, the region’s most widely planted variety. While much production is devoted to light and fruity table wines our Barbera d’Asti ‘Le Orme’ by Michele Chiarlo is a bit more of a serious example with a touch of oak used to add that structure and body.

Dolcetto provides the juice for our third wine. Traditionally a bit more rustic than the others winemakers and wine-drinkers alike are falling back in love with this variety. Our example is made by top Barolo producer Francesco Rinaldi and this wine is actually from a single vineyard within the Barolo area itself and is light, fresh and fruity and altogether rather classy.

Piedmont & NW Italy White Snapshot Case

A 3 bottle Snapshot Case featuring a sparkling and 2 white wines from the fantastic northern Italian region of Piedmont.
Piedmont is one of the great wine regions of Europe and while its reds grab much of the limelight the whites from here are becoming increasingly popular. The most well known of these, and arguably of Italy, is Gavi. Crisp, fresh and incredibly versatile these wines have quite rightly cemented themselves on wine shelves and lists around the UK. Made from the grape Cortese our case includes a classic, approachable, everyday, great value example as well as one that’s a slight bit different… A favourite here at Noble Green our Gavi Spumante from the la Battistina estate is the perfect aperitif and shows what Gavi can do. Our third wine might contend to be the second white wine of Piedmont (after Gavi) though is not commonly found outside the area. Roero Arneis comes from the Roero hills just north of Barolo and Barbaresco and is made with the Arneis grape. Made by the Negro family our wine is a quality example with fragrant sone and tropical fruits and fresh minerality.
