Wine of the Month - June 2022
A clue to the style of June’s Wine of the Month is in the name. ‘Le Bon Côté’ translates as ‘The Bright Side’ and this zippy and fruity white certainly lives up to that moniker.
It’s from vineyards sitting among the Mediterranean garrigue not too far from the cooling influence of the sea in between Beziers and Montpellier in the Languedoc. Made mainly from Vermentino it’s got a deliciously bright character with enough body to make it a pleasing mouthful which is helped by some Terret and some attractive aromatics helped along by a bit of Viognier.
It's a very easy to like wine which, at a modest 12.5% ABV, ticks all the boxes for summertime drinking whether you pair it with fish, seafood or poultry, or drink it all on its own relaxing on a warm afternoon.
At just £11.50 it’s not going to break the bank and it’s certainly worth having a bottle or two in the fridge ready and waiting for just the right moment.
Le Bon Cote Blanc
In a nutshell: A crisp and fruity white blend from the Languedoc.
The lowdown: Domaine des Lauriers who make this wine are an estate committed to sustainable agriculture and to that end they're members of France's Terra Vitis organisation which ensures high ethical standards are maintained by its members. This is a blend of Vermentino and one of Languedoc's oldest white varieties, Terret, which, although not seen frequently these days, helps add body and crispness to the wines it makes. After picking the grapes here have been gently pressed and cool fermented and the result is a brilliantly zippy, crisp, and fruity wine.
When to drink: Multifaceted and very easy to like this is a pretty failsafe choice that most people will really enjoy either by itself or with fish, seafood, or poultry dishes.
