Waterkloof Seriously Cool Chenin 2021 Limited Parcel

Medium

South African Chenin Blanc can make some of the most versatile, rewarding and great value wines about and we’ve sourced a specially priced limited parcel of a rather good one!

About the wine

Seriously Cool Chenin Blanc made by Waterkloof Wines, one of our favourite producers, is the result of old 30-40 year old bush vines producing fruit with great natural acidity from the Helderberg sub-region near the ocean, and old vines from central Stellenbosch that grow grapes with fantastic ripeness. The perfect compliment of clean, crisp acidity and rich, ripe fruitiness.

Sustainability

Sustainability is at the heart of what Waterkloof do and their enviable position on hills overlooking False Bay means that they get the full blast of the Cape Doctor wind racing in off the ocean which provides that fantastic natural acidity. The estate is farmed organically and is a harbinger of biodiversity with more than half given over to the wild flora and fauna of local fynbos (the internationally important biome), and in the winery it’s definitely a less is more approach that is about allowing the wines to shine.

In summary...

A super versatile, well and thoughtfully made, great value, and most importantly highly enjoyable South African Chenin. Only 30 bottles available at this special price.

In a nutshell:
Soft, rounded and fruity old bush vine South African Chenin Blanc from Stellenbosch.

The lowdown:
Waterkloof make some of our favourite South African wines and work organically and with minimal intervention in the winery allowing the grapes, vineyards and different vintages to shine. This fruity Chenin comes from 30-40 year old bush vines from both the Helderberg sub-region by the windswept False Bay, that produces grapes with great natural acidity, and inland from central Stellenbosh where it's a little warmer and the grapes get a little riper. A light touch in the winery with whole-bunch gentle pressing of the grapes, fermentation with wild yeast naturally prevailing in the vineyards, and a gentle maturation in old, large 600l barrels and concrete eggs. The result is a wonderful balance between rich, ripe fruit and clean, natural acidity. Aromas of stone fruits such as pears and nectarines with hints of gooseberries and honeyed notes lead onto a soft and rounded palate with a real richness to the mouthfeel.

When to drink: A versatile food wine try with chicken dishes, in particular chicken kiev, meatier white fish or just fish & chips, or creamy pasta or risotto dishes.
