Vegan Wine
The part of the winemaking process that makes wines unsuitable for Vegans is often the traditional fining agent. A fining agent is used to remove the tiny particles of sediment found in a wine that filtration cannot remove. The traditional fining agent usually contains egg whites or casein (a protein found in milk). These products, however, have started to be moved over to a lot of vegetable-based products instead, for example, bentonite, a form of clay or pea protein.

Those producers who do not use these filtration alternatives will usually leave the particles to naturally sink to the bottom of the bottle. Other animal products are used in the production of wine, but not the making of the wine, including beeswax and agglomerated corks (which use milk-based glues).

In reality, most wines are vegan friendly; however, the EU and the US don't currently require wineries to list the fining agents that they used on the labels. Most wine retailers, like ourselves, have tried to make it easier for consumers by highlighting which wines are vegan. You will find over 400 vegan-friendly wines in our selection.

Organic Wine
"Food that is the product of a farming system which avoids the use of man-made fertilizers, pesticides, growth regulators & livestock feed additives. Irradiation & the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or products produced from or by GMOs are generally prohibited by organic legislation." DEFRA

Although this is the DEFRA definition of organic, there is no internationally agreed-upon definition of organic. A general summary is that organic foods are foods grown without the use of artificial fertilizers, pesticides or other chemicals. 95% of the ingredients must come from organically produced plants or animals. The EU rules require organic foods to be approved by an organic certification body.

For organic wines, the grapes must be grown without using artificial or synthetic chemicals such as pesticides or herbicides. Producers commonly use methods that involve working with nature to boost the vineyard's biodiversity, for example, introducing predator populations to manage pests, using natural composts to fertilize vines and grazing sheep among the vines to keep weeds at bay. Only when it is essential will organic vineyards use protective sprays, and even then, they will use ones made from natural products. A common protective spray used is made from lime, copper sulphate and water.

Even if a wine is made without artificial or synthetic chemicals, it doesn't necessarily mean that it is free from other additives. Under the organic legislation, a wine can include a number of additives without losing its 'organic' status. These include yeast, egg whites and animal enzyme. Therefore it is important to note that just because a wine is organic doesn't necessarily make it suitable for vegans.

Our Selection
In our selection, we separate our organic wines into three categories – Certified Organic, Biodynamic and Practicing Organic. We currently have around 40 Certified Organic Vegan Wines, around 40 Biodynamic Vegan Wines and around 30 Vegan wines where the producer is Practicing Organic.
