New Wine Arrivals

Medium

New wines!! Hopefully that is the end of the cold and wet spring… we’re looking forward to a warm and sunny bank holiday and beyond into June! Therefore, of course, we have been looking at rosés from around the world to enjoy, be it sat outside with a barbecue, a salad, a takeaway, or just on their own. To answer the most commonly asked question concerning rosé, yes, these ones are all ‘dry’ but all very different to one another, as you might have come to expect from us…

Starting in South Africa and one of our favourite great value, sustainable producers, False Bay Vineyards, we introduce their ‘Whole Bunch Rosé’ made with the grapes Cinsault and Mourvedre.

Moving to Spain and Andalucía we have Bodegas Contreras Luiz located in a beautiful part of the world near the Portuguese border. Their flavorsome Édalo Rosado is made with Syrah and has some real depth, fruitiness and a touch of spice. Absolutely great value. Further east near Valencia Celler del Roure produce biodynamic wines from rare, local varieties. ‘Les Prunes’ is made from the near extinct red grape Mando, but is made like a white wine, however the result is pink. Wonderfully fresh and minerally with light tannins and some savoury touches.

Moving to France and the southern Rhône Valley cru village of Tavel. Unlike its more famous neighbours such as Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Lirac Tavel can only produce rosé wines, and what rosé wines they are. Deeper, darker, richer and with an ability to age, in contrast to the in vogue Provençal style, these can be serious rosés. This 2019 from Gonnet is incredibly moreish and is drinking superbly now. Rich and concentrated, full of flavour, delicious.

Staying in southern France (because, well, who wouldn’t) we introduce two new organic Provençal rosés, one from Chateau la Verrerie in the beautiful Luberon, and one from Chateau de l’Escarelle in the Coteaux Varois en Provence. Both chateaux have a firm eye on sustainability and the environment and both wines have a wonderful elegance to them, though they both offer something different to one another.

And our final rosé for the moment is not so much new to us but celebrating the new 2020 vintage of Surrey’s Albury Vineyard ‘Silent Pool’ Rosé. Demand always outstrips supply for our local rosé and our allocation is small, so enjoy while you can and then wait for the 2021!

This is not a rosé. From the Rueda wine region of Spain know for its whites made with the Verdejo grape we have Manuel Cantalapiedra’s ‘Lirondo’. This is a new vision for Verdejo and Rueda. Lirondo is farmed organically from a single plot of old vines in the heart of Rueda and is bottled in fined and unfiltered, so in ‘beer speak’ it’s a hazy white! Don’t be afraid though it is not wildly out there and has a lovely weight and richness on the palate.

Also check out our New Arrivals page to see new wines from some of the classic regions including Burgundy, Bordeaux and Piedmont.

So we hope there is something in this bunch that grabs you and have a great Bank Holiday Weekend and hopefully warm and sunny June!
