Limited Parcel - Quinta da Fonte Souto Red 2018
A special priced limited parcel of a fresh and complex Portuguese red, made from a blend of native and national grape varieties, a true expression of the region’s unique terroir and altitude from Alentejo, with excellent aging potential.
The Quinta da Fonte Souto wines are produced under the Symington Family Estate name, after being acquired by them in 2017. However, the 207-hectare estate produces wines nothing like the other Symington ranges. This is the only vineyard of theirs that is outside the Douro. The vineyard lies on the slopes of the Sao Mamede Range at an altitude of 500 metres in the Alentejo sub-region of Portalegre. The property benefits from cooler and wetter conditions than the hot Alentejo plain. The Fonte Souto wines are in a class of their own because they express the freshness and elegance of the altitude, as well as the structure and complexity from the estate’s extensive collection of mature, low-yielding vines.
The hand-picked grapes are placed in small, shallow boxes and taken to the on-site winery. Manual sorting is followed by destemming and gentle crushing after which the grapes are transferred to the fermentation vats. Fermentations are individually monitored, and the temperature and macerations are adjusted to maximise the potential of each fermenting batch. A period of post fermentation maceration follows to encourage the extraction of some tannin from the pips, this adds structure and longevity to the wine. This red is built around the signature Alicante Bouschet with important contributions from Trincadeira, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Alfrocheiro.
This wine has aromas of Mediterranean scrub with balsamic notes of pine needles and resin. Broad and complex on the palate, with succulent flavours of forest fruits and hints of clove. The taut tannins provide a well-toned structure, balanced by fresh acidity which gives the wine great definition. The diversity of grape varieties used mark the wine with a very particular profile, as well as promising ageing potential.
